Happy September! We are preparing for many events and exciting organizational updates as we near the end of summer.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. Suicidal thoughts, although common, can sometimes indicate a need for check in or follow up.

September is a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. We can use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people experiencing suicidal ideation or those who may know someone expressing these thoughts and feelings. Let's work together to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.

Some stats:

Research has consistently shown that “women who are sexually abused show a 12- to 20-fold increase in suicide attempts. Child sexual abuse confers a 150 percent increased risk of later suicidal behavior (MacIsaac, Bugeja, & Jelinek, 2017).

In a national study, heterosexual women who had experienced physical violence by a partner were more than seven times more likely to report current suicidal ideation than their counterparts who had not experienced IPV after controlling for sociodemographic variables, childhood abuse, and psychiatric disorders ().

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 immediately.

Thank you to all who joined us in the Miner's Day parade!
